Another possible explanation regarding this bizarre custom, is the pagan origination which states that by smashing things and making loud noises, the Ancient Greeks wanted to wake up Persephone, the goddess of spring, and accelerate the coming of spring. After the first resurrection, as it is considered, the Philharmonic bands come back into the streets, playing joyful music. At midnight, people go en masse to the central squares of Corfu town and the villages to celebrate Resurrection with glory and by following the typical customs. Well-known churches for their majestic liturgies are Agios Ioannis (Town Centre) with Byzantine psalms, the monastery of Agia Efimia (Mon Repos), Platytera (Mantouki), Agioi Theodoroi (Garitsa), Ypapanti (Lakka Paxos), Agios Charalambos (Gaios Paxos) and the Cathedral (Town Centre), while in the monasteries of the Transfiguration (Agios Athanassios), and Kyra Kokkinada (Lefkimmi) you can experience the atmosphere of the most important celebration of Christianity. The numerous churches of the island render the atmosphere even more religious. On this national holiday and according to tradition, people visit the countryside, have picnics, gather flowers and turn them into wreaths to hang on their front doors. Like in many European countries, May 1st is a bank holiday in Greece, known as Labor Day. It is a celebration of laborers and the working classes that is typically promoted by the international labor movement, anarchists, socialists, and communists and occurs every year on the 1st of May.
- [21st of May – The Unification of the Ionian Islands](https://www.marilenahotel.com/21st-of-may-the-unification-of-the-ionian-islands/): After the liberation of Greece and the establishment of the Greek State, the Ionian Islands demanded their unification with Greece. Despite its strong objection, Britain along with France and Russia, signed on the 5th of June 1863 the Treaty of London, according to which Britain gave up its role as the head of state of the Ionian Islands and on May 21st 1864 the Ionian Islands were officially united back with Greece. On this day every year a parade takes place in Corfu town where the students, boy scouts and the philharmonic societies of the island participate to celebrate Corfu belonging to Greece once again.
- [Greek Traditional Festivals (Panigiria)](https://www.marilenahotel.com/greek-traditional-festivals-panigiria/): August Events in Corfu 02/08 – Folklore Festival, Kassiopi This is a one of a kind festival in Kassiopi, boasting loud Greek music, to which dancers dressed in traditional costumes dance the day and night away. The beautiful Kassiopi harbour provides the perfect setting for the event. 05/08 – Metamorfosi Sotiros A celebration at the Monastery situated on top of Mount Pantokrator. 10/08 – Varkarola, Palaiokastritsa Varkarola is a famous festival which takes place every summer in Corfu. This event celebrates the miracle of Saint Spyridon, who saved the island from Turkish invasion on 11th August 1716. This miracle is celebrated with a recreation of a nautical battle. A series of boats parade along Palaiokastritsa bay, while bands play traditional music and dancers showcase Greek dancing. At the end of the Varkarola, a boat is set on fire and a giant fireworks display goes underway to commemorate the burning of the Turkish naval fleet during the 18th century siege. 11/08 – St.Spyridon’s Day A procession takes place in Corfu Town, in order to commemorate the intervention of St. Spyridon during the Turkish siege of 1716. Processions start around 9 am in Corfu Town and most of the island’s brass bands take part in what is guaranteed to be a lovely spectacle each and every year. A silver gilt case containing the body of St. Spyridon is displayed in means of public worship for 3 days and nights. It is paraded around the town, followed by the philharmonic bands. 15/08 – Assumption of the Virgin This is the second biggest religious holiday after Easter and is celebrated in almost every town and village in Greece. Every church on the island dedicated to Virgin Mary organizes a festival and Greek music can be heard originating from everywhere!

Ohi Day (also spelled Oxi Day) is a national holiday in Greece that commemorates the rejection by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas of an ultimatum made by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on October 28, 1940, to allow Italian forces to occupy Greece during World War II. The word “ohi” in Greek means “no,” and Metaxas famously responded with a resounding “oxi” to the ultimatum, which became a symbol of Greek resistance against the Axis powers. Ohi Day is celebrated with military parades, school and public ceremonies, and the raising of the Greek flag throughout the country. In Corfu every year on the 28th of October a big parade takes place in Corfu Town in which schools, the navy, scouts and philharmonic bands proudly participate.
